I’ve spent nearly a year working with a personal trainer at VI Fitness. During that time I’ve lost over 50lbs and gained a level of physical and mental fitness I never thought possible at 56. When I started working with my trainer, I was overweight, recovering from a shoulder and back injury and extremely out of shape. I avoided even simple exercise and was in pain a lot of the time. Working slowly and steadily, He developed a personal fitness formula that worked for me from the start. All I have had to do is show up and be prepared to work. My trainer’s expertise, coaching and guidance ensure I improve every step of the way. The changes have been continuous and astounding. I feel a sense of renewal in the body, mind and spirit. A personal trainer is an investment in you future. I’m going to be a grandmother soon and I know I’ll be able to keep up and then some.

I joined VI Fitness about one year ago after moving to Victoria. Although I have worked out for several years, I noticed a plateau with my workout routine. I felt like I was spending a lot of time at the gym without achieving the desired results and my work outs were lacking any real structure. I decided it was time to sign up with a personal trainer to help guide me towards my goals. I signed up for 24 personal training sessions. I had never trained before so I did not know what to expect. The trainer made me feel very comfortable during our sessions and he was very motivating. I learned how to maximize my workouts within an hour per day and also how to exercise my entire body. We discussed the importance of doing exercise with proper technique and how to keep challenging my body. Since completing my sessions, I have noticed that I feel stronger, leaner and my endurance has increased. I am no longer bored at the gym as I have learned so much! I will definitely be signing up for more sessions again this fall.

Shortly after my 49th birthday I decided that it was time to set a goal and become Fit by Fifty. After signing up for a body assessment and getting those disturbing results there was no going back. With the encouragement of the staff and hiring personal trainer, I was able to reach my goal and more. It took self control, determination and dedication to the routines set for me each week. My trainer was able to assist and offer helpful tips on how to make it through while travelling for work and Christmas functions without really disrupting every day life. So after 33 weeks, I am now 35 lbs lighter, have dropped 10 years in body age, reduced my body fat significantly and have gone from a size 16 to a size 6. I can truly say that I haven’t felt better and look forward to whatever 50 brings.

I have worked out in other gyms in the past and have quit because I didn’t like atmosphere or the staff just didn’t care about it’s members. I have been a VIFFW member since at least 2001, maybe even longer. I’ve always enjoyed the atmosphere of working out at a club exclusively for women. The staff is always courteous and helpful and I enjoy my experiences there. I really appreciate that the manager, she greets me by name every time I come to the gym. I also like the fact that the members range in age, size and physical fitness levels. From my perspective all the members appear focused on what they are doing, rather than gossiping or exchanging remarks about what everyone is wearing, which had been my experience at other gyms.

In late 2007 I decided I wanted to up my level of fitness and engaged the services of a personal trainer. My Trainer is an enthusiastic, dedicated professional who has a smile on her face each time I walk through the front doors. She created many different types of weight-lifting programs for me and I love the variety. Now, a year later, I have a wide selection of programs to choose from when I want to work out. The last few months we have incorporated more cardio into my program so I am not always doing the same things. I love her attitude which is one of persistent, joyful coaching and encouragement. If it hadn’t been for her personality, I doubt I would have continued with the training sessions as they were challenging, but rewarding. We always share the intensity of the workouts as well as stories and laughter. I noticed several times that people around us were often smiling and enjoying our antics!

My accomplishments to date include weight loss, increased endurance, stamina and strength. I also believe my upper arms, abs and legs are more toned. I intend to continue my membership with VIFFW as being healthy and fit is a life-time commitment I have made to myself. Thanks VIFFW!!

Weight training with Sharon…
I always look forward to my personal training sessions with Sharon. She always knows when I need to be pushed a little more, and when to ease up a bit. She also keeps the exercises varied and challenging, with lots of ideas on how to “torture” me (in a good way!). Personally, I find committing to weight training on my own a challenge at this point in my life. The scheduled training sessions with her inspire and encourage me in meeting my personal health goals.

All week, I look forward to Saturday mornings. Not because I’m off work (well that helps), but because Saturday at 10:30 a.m. is the weekly Step Challenge class at VI Fitness. I love this class. The Instructor is very committed to her fitness instruction and keeps the participants challenged and engaged. The combinations are advanced but she breaks them down, and it is so exhilarating when you master them. The class is so fun it just flies by, it’s easy to forget that it’s actually good for your health too.

On January 1, 2007 I got on the scale and was shocked to see that I was a whopping 265 lbs. In my mind, I was still a 120 pound glory-day bombshell. My mind had not caught up to my actual body image and it is still a current struggle for me. I went from a size 7 to a size 20 up top and 16-18 on the bottom.

Since then I have lost a total of 47 inches. My lost weight was due mostly to my Polar watch. I kept it up to date with my decreasing weight so it accurately tracked my cardio and calories burned. Doing this made me more accountable at the end of the week for either my success or my failure. I had lost so much weight so quickly, I had to gain back 20 lbs. back due to the hanging skin. I learned that doing it right and slowly is the key. I use Liquid Amp’d, Phytoberry and Whey Protein to keep my calorie intake at 1600/day. I also do cardio 6 days/week, weight train 4 days/week and do Abs 5 days/week.

I have been struggling with my weight for 10 years now. I became morbidly obese five years ago, and had kept adding on the pounds, I tried dieting etc. I have been battling depression on and off during my adult life, and had no energy to do anything. I was always tired and felt very gloomy inside, and I felt so disgusting, until I starting proper Exercise and Nutrition.

I have been going to V.I. Fitness for over a year now. Well on and off, till I booked some personal training sessions with Jenn. I love getting my butt kicked (She is so good at it too). It was definitely a struggle to keep going to the gym but with support, determination and great friends, I am at the gym 3-5 times a week and usually I walk in the morning with my friends. My energy level has doubled, and I have the stamina to do a lot more in a day now. I have even lost 15 Lbs since January, and I feel great. I know the everyday, I still have to push myself to eat properly and exercise and sometimes I fall off track, but Jenn has helped me build up my confidence to pick myself up again. I never want to feel so low again, and I think that is what helps me stay on track. Well and of course, my trainer, my friends, and family.

I signed up before the Westshore club even opened! I love that it is only women here. I started with a personal trainer in January and it was the best thing I ever did! I now feel fabulous! I met my trainer in the fall of 2007 at the VI Fitness Center. Her candid eye looked me over and she remarked, “You’re crooked”. I was immediately impressed. “We will have to straighten you out!” She exclaimed in her professional teacher’s voice and with a twinkle in her eye. Not only has she worked with me to rectify this problem, she has tailored my exercise program to strengthen my weak left side, improve my balance, and designed a rehab program to strengthen the muscles around my knee caps.

Besides being extremely knowledgeable about the workings of the muscular systems, the effect of conditions and diseases, and the exercises needed to fit individuals clients, she has a warm and friendly personality making each training session one to look forward to. She is genuinely concerned about each of her clients, gives excellent advice on nutrition and how to maintain your physical strength and well being while aging. She stays up-to-date by attending various conferences and workshops, passing new-found knowledge and ideas to her clients. My trainer is, in no small way, responsible for my new found enthusiasm to become and stay physically fit and healthy.

Having been a recreational runner for sometime I have decided to try some cross-training to mix things up a bit. I thought I was a pretty fit person to begin with, but soon found out there was a lot of work to do! So, I enrolled in a fitness program with a personal trainer. I now have a better sense of all round fitness and feel so much healthier then before. My trainer and I built a partnership that was created on what I wanted to achieve for my well being, incorporating core strengthening exercises, weights to sculpt my body, and cardio workouts like the spinning class to help shed the excess flab! My running has improved, and I have completed the Island Race Series for the first time without being injured! My trainer has been an inspiration and a great motivator. Thanks!

I have been a member at VI Fitness for just over 4 years now. This is the longest I have ever stayed at one gym. In the past I hopped from gym to gym to find one that fit my lifestyle. VI has done just that. If I don’t have the motivation to workout on my own that day I take a class, If I want some time to myself i’ll hop on the elliptical. The equipment is always clean and there is more than enough to go around. I would recommend this gym to anyone.

When I made my appointment in July of 2008 to meet with a personal trainer, my goal was to change my lifestyle. Dan helped me to do that. The first thing I did was the Body Age Assessment. My body was 6 years older then my actual age. I bought the Platinum training package which gave me my Polar F11 watch, personal training sessions and a nutrition plan. For the next 8 weeks, I followed the workouts Dan had set up for me and the nutrition plan religiously. I was determined to be successful. Meeting with Dan once a week motivated me as well. I knew I was accountable to him. In the first 8 weeks I had great success. I continued getting Dan to kick my butt twice a week. I spent 3 hours in the gym on my own as well and continued to stick with my nutrition plan. In just 6 months I had lost 35 pounds and 14% body fat. I went from a size 12 to a size 2! I feel good in my own skin! I have now maintained that weight loss for 6 months and continue to work out with Dan once a week. My body age is now 9 years younger than my actual age. Although Dan always insists that my success was all me, I know I couldn’t have done it with out him! Thanks Dan! You helped to change my life! I am stronger, I walk taller, I feel amazing and I will never go back!

I started training with a personal trainer 6 months ago … I had a child who was 9 months old. Before he was born I was not very active. After he was born I had gained about 30 lbs., over and above the extra 30lbs that I already had. When he was 5 months old I started getting into fitness with various classes and going to the gym. When my classes ended I had lost about 25lbs. I decided to try just going to the gym. I found myself going in, looking around, hopping on an elliptical machine for 30 mins and then leaving, or participating in one of the classes with a set of 3lb weights by the end feeling like I was going to pass out. I was at the gym a lot; but didn’t feel like my time was being well spent. In fact, my weight hit a plateau for 2 months. I had no idea how to weight train or what it would do, or why it was important. Needless to say I was a long way from my goal of losing 70lbs by my sons 2nd birthday and feeling a bit discouraged. I decided to look into personal training. I knew I needed something because; my knowledge was not enough to do it on my own. I was motivated to achieve my goals and hoping that I could find someone that would really help make my experience great.

My first training session was to set up my cardio. It was AMAZING! The program felt great. As soon as I felt like I couldn’t go on I would look down and see that it was time to change the pace or the incline. It seemed perfectly tailored to me. Throughout the 6 months that I trained, she explained to me the different muscles, the moves that worked them, different variations of the moves. Every time that I worked out with her I gained more confidence in the gym and a lot more knowledge. I can remember having someone comment on my workouts and saying that they looked intense. All I could think of was how there was no way I could be the girl at the gym that was capable of doing things other people might find difficult. It was such a great feeling.
By the end of the 6 months of training I can now say that I am not afraid to grab a set of weights, or Kettle bells, or even a bosu or 2 and get to work. I know how to judge if I am using enough weight, If my form I correct, when I can do more and when I’ve done enough. I am almost 50 lbs towards my goal of 70 lbs with my 8 months left until my son’s 2nd birthday and am confident that my health and fitness will remain a priority for many years to come. I am currently in the best shape of my life and hope that this is just the beginning.
